Carlsen – Anand – the rematch

‎Carlsen v Anand is soon to open in Sochi.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 07th Nov with play starting the following day.

I’m particularly interested in the psychological element of this World Championship rematch, Carlsen has stated that ‘he has the psychological advantage over his opponent’, presumably as he is the reigning champion and wrestled the title from Vishy once before.

I’m not so sure this is correct though, Vishy has not said much (that I’m aware of) but rather, quietly prepared to take on Carlsen with the sole purpose of regaining his crown.

The youngster would do well not to be overconfident and underestimate the older, more experienced player. Who, from a psychological perspective has, in fact, already proved himself time and again. When everyone started to write him off he simply went to the Candidates tournament and blew away the strongest opposition in the world for the right to a seat opposite Carlsen this week.

Personally, I suspect the ‎psychological pressure sits squarely on the shoulders of Carlsen to prove himself again at this level. One should, of course, be cognizant to the fact that Carlsen is the highest rated player in history, has youth and fitness on his side and gives no quarter in endgames, often creating a draw from a lost position and wins from theoretically drawn positions.

Either way, I’m sure the match will be interesting and hope the coverage via the www is reliable.

So, who would your money be on? Once again the chess world waits to see who will emerge the undisputed World Chess Champion‎ 2014.
